[monologue]

It’s the singing that gets them.

A couple of guys in my frat have a Bible study now. At first, it was difficult being like “alright guys… Bible study! Everyone, come to my room and... talk about... God, (trailing off) instead of shotgunning your beers...” It’s awkward.

Keeping my faith in college has definitely been difficult. I don’t smoke, don’t really drink, and I’ve done my best to try and remove myself from the hook-up culture. And this is not because I blindly follow a rulebook. Relationships aren’t about rules, and marriage isn’t about the legal bind. It’s about the two of you, together, forever. There’s no certificate for that. And in the meantime, I’ll just keep doing the things I know to be right. It’s easy once you see people as God sees them. Especially at this school, people just need to get over themselves. It’s like, come on, we’re in this together.

But people are so focused on how they’re perceived that this campus is filled with all this unwarranted arrogance, group mentality, and self-glorification. It’s the wrong way to go about things. Where’s the Colgate hello? That disappeared the week after orientation. People walk around campus without even acknowledging each other. Someone will drop a coffee in the library and people just walk right by them. Stop what you’re doing for a second, grab a napkin and help that person! You’re not above anyone else! self-worth doesn’t boil down to how much people want to hook up with you. For a place that’s so stressful – socially, academically, emotionally – my faith is a rock that I have. No matter what, it'll keep my feet on the ground.

I can get my friends to read passages with me, and talk about what the stories mean to them. But once they have to actually walk the walk, when they have to sing the hymns and actually believe them… I guess I’m the only one interested in that.
