It’s the singing that gets them.
People get really into it and put their hands up like that and are just really… passionate. So I get why my friends were a little weirded out. I mean it’s even a little strange for me, I’M even uncomfortable, and it’s my Christian fellowship!
But whatever works for you, if that’s how you connect with God, I think that’s awesome.
There are a couple Christians in our fraternity house and we have a Bible study now. At first it was difficult being like “alright guys… Bible study! Everyone come to my room and… talk about… God, instead of shotgunning your beers…” It’s awkward.
Keeping my faith in college has definitely been difficult. I don’t smoke, don’t really drink, and I’ve done my best to try and remove myself from the hook up culture. And this is not because I blindly follow a rulebook. Relationships aren’t about rules, and marriage isn’t about the legal bind. It’s about the two of you, together, until the end of time. There’s no certificate for that.
And in the mean time I’ll just keep doing the things I know to be right. It’s easy once you see people as God sees them.
Especially at this school, people just need to get over themselves. It’s like, come on, we’re in this together. But people are so focused on how they’re perceived that this campus is filled with so much unwarranted arrogance, group mentality, and self-glorification. Where’s the Colgate hello? That disappeared the week after orientation. People walk around campus without even acknowledging each other. Someone will drop a coffee in the café and people just walk right by them. Like stop what you’re doing for a second, grab a napkin and help that person!
You’re not above anyone else, not everything is a competition, and your self worth doesn’t boil down to your desirability in the hook up scene.
So for a place that is so stressful – socially, academically, physically, everything – my faith is a rock that I have. No matter what this will make me happy.
